Ayveri
Heels clicking loudly against the grey concrete, I will never understand why girls wear these death traps. I can feel blisters forming on my poor little toes. I thought working with an architect company would allow me to wear my beloved tennis shoes, but according to the Human Resource Rep that hired me we have a uniform.
“Always look professional, even if you are on the field. Heels are a must.”
Damn her. The last time I wore heels was to prom my senior year of high school. It was a disaster, a disaster that gave everyone a laugh. I tripped and fell onto my date. Little did I know, the guy he would stumble into was holding a smuggled in vodka glass and it happened to leave the dance all over my dress and my date. Mike never spoke to me again, but that’s okay, he was a narcissistic asshole.
“Ayveri! Ayveri, you are late!” Emily the crazy secretary that works for the company screams at me.
Well have you walked in these heels? Oh maybe she has. Holy shit, hers are taller than mine! Maybe because she is like a short oompa loompa from Willy Wonka.
“I’m sorry. I thought I started at eight, it’s only seven fifty,” I say, meeting her halfway so she wouldn’t trip trying to get to me. She may have short legs, but they are moving at lightning pace.
“I sent you an email last night! Seven thirty, on the dot! We have a meeting at eight and I need you to take notes! I have to go to a site really quick for Damon. Apparently the house that Peter built for an old couple has cracked roofs. How the hell does a brand new house have cracks in the roof already? Anyway, just write down anything important that they say. Mostly Peter and Damon, they can’t remember anything. I already have the copies of everything being discussed that you have to bring and coffee for them,” She was speaking so fast I only caught the part about a cracked roof. “Are you even listening? It’s your first day and you can’t even keep up,” she sighs in disapproval and I try not to roll my eyes ignoring the pang of failure stabbing me in the chest.
“Notes, Damon, Paul,” I mutter.
Who the hell was Paul? I knew who Damon was. I researched the company before I applied. Apparently it didn’t do me any good. They were the largest architect company nationally and internationally. Building anything from Paris to China and back to Seattle.
“Ayveri! Oh dear lord, am I going to have to do this? Please pay attention!” Emily stresses.
“I‘m paying attention. I know how to take notes. They have their coffee; you made the copies of their notes,” I respond.
Moving my legs faster to keep up with her and trying to catch my breath, before I notice we have gone up a flight of stairs and are now in an area I haven’t been. This building is only two stories and downstairs is where all their ideas are laid out on tables with tiny houses built on top of them for people to get ideas while they wait for meetings. Immediately to the right upstairs is Emily’s tiny office. Emily points to the office to left that is right across from her and says it is mine.
She runs into her office grabs a huge folder and shoves it into my hand and walks down the hallway that is so huge at least five people could walk side by side. We come to a little kitchen room to the right of us again and she grabs two coffees then walks down the hall a little more and we come to a conference room that has glass walls and a whole bunch of men are seated at the round table with a model building in the middle. Emily walks in and all of them look over.
They don’t even say a word as Emily goes to a table in the corner rips the folder from me and takes papers out of it handing them to two men who must be Damon and Peter. She also gives them their coffee. She eyes me telling me to sit at the table. I do and pull out my pen and notebook crossing my legs I open to the first page and look at her. Trying to hold in my attitude but definitely looking at her like I used to look at my mom. “Is this better? Mom.” This look must have pissed her off.
“I’m going now, sorry about the inconvenience.” She says and leaves.
“Are you ready, Ms. Faye?” The man at the head of the table says.
Yep, that’s Damon.
“Yes.” I mutter.
What possessed me to apply for this job? My mom was right my attitude was going to get the better of me and I was going to get myself fired. This meeting took three hours. Three hours of my first day as an assistant and I am trying not to fall asleep. I wrote on at least five pages. When Damon stood up to leave everyone stood up like he was the king and we had to bow down. Yeah right, hell will freeze over before I bow down to anyone. Being the stubborn person I am, I don’t stand I sit still with my legs still crossed. He walks out of the room along with Peter and slowly everyone else in the room leaves and I am left sitting alone. When everyone leaves I stand and put my things together and leave.
Emily still isn’t back to boss me around so I go to my office. It was small but comfortable. My office phone was currently ringing off the hook along with Emily’s so I take initiative and start answering the calls and doing the best I could until asking them to call back later or getting a message from them. When that gets out of the way I start to type up my notes that I took earlier. It takes me less than twenty minutes adding on the time that I had to decipher most of the words because they moved on to fast for me to catch up. I print off four copies of the notes and save myself one then take one to Emily’s desk where I lay it neatly on her disaster of a desk then I am left on a search to find Peter and Damon’s offices. It doesn’t take me long since the upstairs isn’t as big as the downstairs floor. I find them at the back of the building and they have their names on the door along with a lock. I knocked quietly on each and then try to the doors. Both locked. Great. Not even a space for me to slide these damn notes under.
I look around awkwardly and this whole floor is deserted. I don’t think my first day is going so great. When is my lunch by the way? I am starving. My bottomless pit of a stomach can only go so long without having substance. I check all the rooms up here in search of someone and end up walking down the stairs to the bottom floor. I can hear talking and walk towards it.
I hear both Damon and Paul’s loud obnoxious voices along with Emily’s bossy tone. I turn a corner to see them talking to a couple. Everyone turns to me and now I am the spotlight. Why do they always just turn and not say anything.
“What?” Emily snaps at me.
I try not to kill her with my hateful glare and turn to look at Damon and Paul. Whoa, they are taller when they are not sitting in a chair for three hours.
“Here are the notes from this morning.” I say handing them each a copy. They look shocked and Emily quickly snatches both papers out of their hands.
“You email it to them! They will just lose this.” She snaps.
I hate her so much! She acts as if I’m not capable of doing anything.
“I already emailed it to both of you. I wasn’t sure if you liked a hard copy or not seeing as how Emily didn’t inform me about your preference.” I turn my glare on her totally throwing her under the bus “Also I checked my email about the meeting this morning and it’s not there. I posted a sticky note on top of the notes of my correct email just in case and also emailed you to make sure you have it.”
She looks livid and, to be honest, I don’t care. She deliberately made me look bad this morning and now I was out to get her.
“Thank you, Ayveri, is it?” Paul asks holding out his hand for me to shake.
“Yes.” I shake his hand
“I, for one, like a hard copy. I hardly look at my emails when they are titled notes from today’s meeting. I have too many meetings to actually know which one it is,” he adds smiling.
I nod appreciating him coming to my defense.
“Also, Emily, when is my lunch?” I ask her turning my attention to her noting that Damon hasn’t said a word.
“One thirty.” She states.
I nod and turn, walking away.
Damon
The meeting was supposed to start two minutes ago. Where the hell was Emily and this new assistant? I didn’t have the patience for this today. Alexa wants to get married and I for one hand rather not get married for a while. We got into a huge fight after that where she threw me out of, my own house and I stayed the night at my parents. Now I am wearing baggy pants that are my fathers and I have a too tight belt that is stabbing me in my stomach.
Right then, Emily and a girl come through the door. I don’t resist my glare that is stabbing them both in the back. When Emily turns and leaves, the new girl sits and she has attitude written all over her. We start the meeting and it just makes me want to fall asleep. Emily usually writes it up and sends it to us in an email and that’s when I actually pay attention to what I am doing. Hopefully this girl is capable of taking decent notes. During the meeting I see Paul glance at this girl every once in a while.
When the meeting ends I stand along with everyone else. I notice the girl cross her legs and does not move one bit. I ignore her and leave the meeting room. Going to my office I sit down for maybe two minutes before Emily’s nasally voice comes on the speaker.
“Damon, you have a couple here to see you.”
“I’ll be right down.” I stand up leaving my office seeing Paul’s door wide open.
“Where you going?” Paul asks me.
“A couple is here. Let’s go you're coming.” I state and walk to the stairs.
Walking down the stairs I can hear Peter walking behind me so I knew he followed me. I go to the front and find Emily and the couple. They looked like they just got married because they were all over each other.
“Hi, Im Damon and this is Paul. How can I help you guys today?” I say with my best welcoming voice.
“I am building my wife her dream house. Well more like I am buying it and you can build it.” The man says smiling.
Of course he is.
“Do you have everything in mind or would you like to look around first?” I ask.
“I have my kitchen and bedroom but nothing else.” The lady states unsure of herself.
I nod and the next thirty minutes we spend going around the warehouse looking at all the models Peter and I have built throughout the years. I hear someone walking up to us and all of us turn at one time.
“What?” Emily snaps at her.
If looks could kill Emily might be dead by now. The girl looks to Paul, and I and I am shocked. This girl has spunk and I am not sure if I love it or hate it. She says something to Paul and I but all I can do it stare at the way she stands and the way her hair is tucked behind her ear showing her diamond earrings. Maybe they are fake. Emily did say she got this job out of college; she is probably swimming in debt right about now.
I watch as Emily snatches the papers out of her hand and the shock on the couple’s faces is priceless. I’m too busy watching the waves of emotion run across this girl's face to yell at Emily or apologize to the couple for her.
Then she starts to speak again “I already emailed it to both of you. I wasn’t sure if you liked a hard copy or not, seeing as how Emily didn’t inform me about your preference.” I see the smirk form on Paul's lips and I refrain mine from coming through. It’s about time someone put Emily in her place while my sister and girlfriend weren’t here to do it. “Also I checked my email about the meeting this morning and its not there. I posted a sticky note on top of the notes of my correct email just in case, and also emailed you to make sure you have it.”
I watch as Emily’s hands form into tight fists and her face turns as bright as a lobster. This girl had some balls. We are going to have to keep her around!
Paul speaks up then, “Thank you, Ayveri, is it?” he holds his hand out to her and I want to shove it out of the way and replace it with my own.
How did he know her name and I didn’t? Emily must have told us it and I wasn’t listening. I always zone her out.
“Yes.” Ayveri says and shakes his hand her hand twice as small as his.
“I, for one, like a hard copy. I hardly look at my emails when there are titled Notes from Today's Meeting. I have too many meetings to actually know which one is which.”
I resist to roll my eyes at him. We maybe have five meetings a week. Ayveri nods at him and I can see a slight smirk forming at her lips.
“Also, Emily when is my lunch?” Ayveri says turning to Emily throwing a glance in my direction.
“One thirty.” Emily states.
The girl turns and leaves without a further word and I watch as she makes her way back to the stairs. I turn to Emily and finally can say something without the distraction of Ayveri.
“I’ll see you in my office after I am done.” I state and turn back to the couple starting my apology to them.
Once I am done with the couple I go to my office passing Ayveri's. I look to see she is gone. She must be at lunch. Talking to the couple took longer than expected. Even after Emily's little tantrum they still wanted to work with us. Walking into my oversized office I see Emily sitting in the chair in front of my desk legs crossed reading something on her phone. When she hears me enter she puts her phone down and looks at me. I sit down in my chair and look at her.
"You’re lucky I’m not going to fire you. That tantrum was out of line." I say.
"I’m sorry, I understand." She apologizes.
"Either you make Ayveri feel welcomed and comfortable here or I will find someone who can." I state and look at her waiting for her reaction.
"Yes sir." She says.
I nod and she turns to leave.
"Oh and Emily. I like a hard copy for future reference." I state and turn to my email.
I hear Emily leave and I relax a bit. This job was going to make me bald. Every other girl that she has hired she has either scared them away or fired them for the stupidest of things. I hear my blackberry start to go off and take it out of my pocket. Alexa's face shines bright across my screen. I set my phone down on my desk the screen faced down. I didn't feel like getting yelled at some more today. My phone stops ringing after minute then it continues. I put it on silent and continue with my work. Busy work that's all that it was. Paul was going to find locations where we could build this couples dream home while I did nothing, just waited. I'm pulled out of my thoughts by a sudden knock on the door.
"Damon, I have an Alexa on the phone for you. She said it was an emergency." It's Ayveri and I don't recall inviting her to open my door.
"Tell her I am busy please." I continue with the same email I have been on for the past five minutes avoiding any eye contact with Ms. Attitude who is still in my office doorway.
"She said that you would say that. She said to tell you to either answer your damn phone or she will start packing."
Course she did. When did she not threaten to move out? Every single fight we get into she pulls that card and every single time I fall for it afraid that my sister might hang me by my toes off my balcony.
"Thank you Ayveri. You can leave now." My tone is clipped and I don't feel bad. She just had to tell Alexa I was in the office.
I pick up my office phone and press the shining red button. "I'm busy Alexa, what do you need?"
"Is that anyway to answer the phone to your girlfriend?" She snaps at me.
"You kicked me out of my own house Alexandra. What else do you want me to do? I'm done chasing after you." I run a hand through my hair putting at it.
"I'm not a child Damon don't call me by my full name unless you want a real fight. Amelia agrees that you are over reacting."
"I wasn't aware my sister was a part of our relationship Alexa. I'm coming home tonight. Either you can be there or leave neither one bothers me at this point. Good bye." I slam my phone down in frustration.
She always knew what buttons to push to really piss me off. That's the downside of being in a relationship with someone you have known your whole life. They literally know everything about you.
I press the intercoms button that goes to Ayveri’s office.
"Ayveri if any of my family members or friends call in the next four hours tell them I am out on a sight and have left my phone. Do not and I repeat do not let them pressure you into it."
"Yes sir." She answers back.
I turn off my cell phone and pull at my hairs. Tonight was going to be a long night.
Alexa
He drove me crazy, you would think that after twenty years of knowing each other and being in a relationship for seven years he would want to at least think about marrying me. He hasn’t said anything though, not even a hint. When I confronted him last night he just got defensive so I kicked him out until he could get his priorities in check.
“So he hung up on you?” Amelia’s voice drawing me back to our work.
“Yes. He better not come back tonight or World War 3 might start.” I set down my coffee as I look over more designs for fashion week coming up.
“What an ass! My brother is an idiot.” Amelia grabs a design from my pile that apparently she didn’t like because, she threw it right into the garbage.
“I came up with that one you know.” I snap at her.
“You lose your touch when you are distracted and Alexa don’t be fooled that was ugly.” She rolls her eye at me and sits in her chair again.
“We have three months to decide on outfits and you just keep throwing them out Amelia, how are we supposed to be ready in time if you are picky!”
She rolls her eyes at me again which just fuels my anger even more.
“Alexa, stop being a bitch to me. I’m not the one who refuses to marry you!”
I give her my best glare and stand up.
“Go to hell.” I snap and walk out of my own office slamming the door getting the attention of all the people in our office.
I walk down the hallway to the ladies room and throw open the door. I dial Damon’s work number and tap my foot. He was going to get a piece of my mind whether he liked it or not.
“Caveryl Construction good afternoon how can I help you?” It was the same girl as before. I didn’t catch her name the first time and this time I will. Emily always hires the ugly chicks so I’m hoping her face doesn’t match her voice because her voice sounds decent enough.
“I need to speak to Damon.” I get straight to the point. I’m not in the mood for the whole conversation where she asks how I am today.
“I’m sorry Mr. Caverly is on a sight at the moment. I believe he left his cell phone here.” She sure can make a good liar. Damon never goes on sights unless they are building that day, he wasn't building anything today.
“Put me through or you can give him a message and trust me this isn’t a message you will feel comfortable with.”
“Ma’am, I cannot put you through to Mr. Caverly seeing how he isn’t here. Can I take a message?” She had attitude. A lot of it and I was only on the phone with her. I didn’t like her.
“Here is a message then no name. Make sure you write it down. Do you have a pen and paper ready?” Sarcasm evident in my voice. She doesn’t say anything so I just continue, “You tell him if he wants to ever talk to me again he will call before he leaves work. You tell him that I will unleash his mother and sister on him, and make sure you tell him that his stuff with be waiting at his parents if he wants to continue acting like a child.”
Slamming my phone to the counter my phone groans under the impact and I can practically hear as the glass shatters on my poor IPhone. Years of anger management class have taught me nothing. Have you ever been in one of those things? They just make you angrier with their questions and the activities you have to do as a group, although I haven’t have one in 9 years they probably haven’t changed much.
I look up and stare at my reflection. Piercing green eyes, tan skin, and jet black hair is what the naked eye would see, I for one see the hurt in my eyes of being rejected by the man I love and the anger of never understanding why he won’t just marry me already.
Miley Cyrus Drive rings through the deserted bathroom as I feel my shattered phone start to vibrate. I pick it up trying to see the name but failing. The cracks were to severe.
“This is Alexa.” I answer.
“Hey beautiful.” The familiar voice makes me tense but relax a little.
“What do you want Paul.” I run my free hand through my hair sighing in frustration.
“Want to come over tonight?” He asks.
“Not really. I’m busy.” It was an excuse. I would of jumped at the opportunity to join him tonight when Damon and I usually got in fights but I was too mentally exhausted to.
“I know you and Damon are fighting. Just come over. I’ll have wine and beer waiting along with dinner.” Wine. My weakness and he knew that.
“I’ll think about it. I have to go get a new phone apparently if you slam your phone face down onto a marble counter it shatters.” I move to leave the bathroom going slowly. I didn’t need Amelia’s nosy butt asking questions if she saw me on the phone.
“Fine. I’ll be waiting.” He hangs up and I open the door walking out.
I find Amelia right where I left her in my office looking at designs.
“Want to go get a new phone with me?” I hold up my phone with an innocent look on my face.
She looks over and laughs.
“Are you going to be nice?”
“If I have to.” I grab my purse and make it rest on my shoulder.
“How did it break?”
“The bathroom counter and my phone got into a fight.” Is all I say as we walk out of the office.
Ayveri
I have been working for Caverly Construction for a whole week now. Emily was still the same with her nasally annoying voice. I was kinda hoping she would change as the days went on. I have learned through the five short days that if you wear flats no one cares. The Human Resources lady was a liar, my piggy toes and I were thoroughly annoyed with her also.
Damon has not changed either Monday was not a fluke. He was always an ass it was like clock work, from the minute he got here to the minute he left he made it a mission to make my job miserable. Paul was the perfect gentleman, a creepy gentleman. If I counted how many times he flirted with me a day I would run out of fingers and toes.
“Ayveri! Earth to Ayveri!” I snap out of my thoughts to see Damon in my office doorway.
“I don’t pay you to daydream all day.” He snaps at me.
Yep! There is he the Damon I know and hate. I hold my tongue trying my hardest not to reply with a smartass comeback.
“We are working late tonight, I hope you brought dinner.”
I better get over time.
“How would I know to bring dinner if you just told me I was staying late.”
Yep there we go. Someone hold my tongue before I get myself fired on Day 6.
He seems to tense and glares at me. Oh if looks could kill.
“I don’t appreciate the attitude Ms. Faye I am your boss not your friend so treat me as such. If you need to leave to get dinner then leave now.” He leaves my doorway turning to stomp his way back to his office like a toddler. Okay, maybe he didn’t really stomp but he might as well. Drama Queen.
I look at the time, 12:32. So do I get my lunch also? I open my last drawer on my desk and pull out my purse and keys. Logging out of my computer I leave the my office door open as I descend down the stairs.
Emily was at a site with Paul looking over some details today so I got a break from her finally. There was only so much a person can handle before they snap and I rather not snap just yet. I think I will save it for later.
I make it back to the office just on time. I didn’t need Drama Queen yelling at me for being a minute later. I store chicken alfredo in the staff refrigerator and head back to my office busying myself with anything and everything. Around 5 Damon comes into my office to tell me to meet him in the conference room in thirty minutes.
I resist to tell him that a please and thank you would be appreciated but decide against it. Sure boss man treat your employees like dirt. See where that gets you, looks don’t get you everything especially not respect in my book.
At 5:28 I get up and leisurely walk to the conference room. Opening the door I see Damon has laid out posters with designs and papers are scattered all over the table.
Doesn’t he know that I know nothing about designs or construction! That’s why i'm the secretary not the partner.
“This is that couples house we are designing. Tracey and James. Tracey doesn’t know how to make a decision on anything so I need some girls help. I don’t know what a girl thinks and I need to get something together so she can tell me if she likes it or not. Paul says he is busy doing something tonight or more like someone that he can’t help me and the last people to ask on the list are Alexa and Amelia.” Damon mutters as he is stares at the scattered papers, his hands on his hips. His button down had two buttons unbuttoned and he didn’t have an undershirt on giving a glimpse of his tanned chest. His black hair was sticking up in all ends like he has been pulling at it all day and he had dark circles under his light blue eyes that reminded me of the ocean.
Oh god i'm totally checking out my boss right now. My mother would kill me if she caught me doing that. I shake my head and realize that he was now staring at me. Great not only was I openly checking him out but he caught me.
“Can you help me or not Ayveri, I don’t want to waste my time.” His clipped tone breaks the silence in the room and slaps me in the face making me realize that even though he was beautiful I still hated everything about him.
“Yes, I can.” I walk over to the table and start looking at all designs.
I must of zoned out because I am dragged out of my concentration by Damon shaking my shoulder.
“Hey, I think I smell something burning so I am going to go check it out. I just wanted to let you know.” Concern was in his voice but probably for his precious building. The last thing he and everyone who works here needed was this building to be set on fire.
“Okay.” Is my idiot reply and he just nods leaving the room. I try to continue with the task at hand but I can’t concentrate because now I can smell smoke and Damon has been out for a while. I walk out of the room the smell of smoke just getting stronger.
“Damon?” I call out.
The smoke was getting stronger as I made my way to the back of the building.
“Damon?” I yell louder to see if he can hear me. No response.
This is why people created the buddy system! For emergencies like this; although I don’t think Damon would really follow the buddy system with me of all people.
Ugh! What is going on here? There was obviously a fire but where? Why the hell was I searching for it and so they even believe in fire detectors here because I don’t hear any going off right now. It was definitely a Monday. Nothing goes right on a Monday.
Walking into the storage room I can now see the fire. My skin starts to heat up and for some reason I can’t bring myself to move and go call for help. Where was Damon?
“Damon!” I scream into the burning room. There was so many things that I couldn’t even see him if he were in here lying and dying on the floor.
Orange flames is all I can see in the room. The ceiling covered in them along with the walls. My skin was starting to heat up from being to close but I still couldn’t bring myself to move. If he was in there I can’t just leave him, but I also can’t just jump into a burning room without anyone knowing I am in there. Oh god why am I still deliberating this! Act Ayveri move your damn feet!
“Ayveri!” I hear Damon yell. I look into the room but I can’t make out anything.
“Ayveri move! Get out of the way!” Panic is all that I can hear in his voice. I slowly turn to see him running to me.
What? Why is he running.
I hear something start to collapse and look up just in time for the ceiling above the door to give out. Right then my body is thrown out of the way and I hear Damon yell in pain. It all happened too fast I couldn't make out what happened. I look over at Damon and I am a good foot away from him. He was where I should of been under the doorway. What scared me even more was that he was knocked out in front of a burning room that was spreading quickly with burnt wood and what looked like bricks.
“Help!” I finally scream out and move into action. I start to throw off all the debris that was laying on him burning my hands in the process.
Shit if these were burning my hands what damage would they be doing to Damon right now.
I start moving as fast as I can.
I get most of the debris off before I stand and grab Damon's arms trying to drag him away from the room. I don’t make much progress but I get him at least six feet away.
I grab Damon's arms and try moving him more.
The smoke was engulfing us making me cough and causing my lungs to burn.
The smoke was getting bad and it didn’t have anywhere to leave the building.
The doors to the building are thrown open and I am met with the relieving sight of fire fighters. The next thing I know a breathing mask is shoved on my face and I can breathe in the fresh oxygen. They lift Damon effortlessly and then I am picked up bridal style out of the burning building.
Alexa
“Get off of me! How is he?” I cry shoving the nurses out of my way.
“He is in critical care ma’am. His leg was crushed under the debris and he may have a brain bleed from being hit in the head.” The annoying blonde haired doctor says.
“A brain bleed?” Oh god.
“Alexa!” I hear someone scream my name. I turn to see Amelia and Damon’s parents running into the emergency room.
“Where is my son?” Roman addresses the doctor.
“He is up getting x-rays and an MRI of his head sir.” Blonde doctor says.
“What happened? How was there a fire?” Amelia asks.
“We still are unsure as to what happened. A girl was with him and she is still unconscious also. She pulled him out far enough, luckily the fire department got there in time. “
“What was he doing with a girl alone at his office?” It comes out of my mouth before I can even think about it and Amelia glares at me.
“I’m sorry. Not what I should be asking right now.”
The doctor ignores me then goes onto explaining Damon's condition to his parents in more detail.
Oh god! What if he dies! Our last memory together would be us arguing! Why does everything have such bad timing!
“Alexa, come on we are going to go sit.” Amelia says nudging my shoulder. I snap out of my daze and follow them to a row of chairs. We sit across from her parents, Jill was a sobbing mess whatever Roman did she wouldn’t stop.
“Whose shirt is that?” Amelia blurts out.
I turn to look at her and then look down at my shirt. Shit. This was definitely not my shirt.
“Damon’s.” I lie.
“Yeah I hope its my brothers.”
“It is.” I snap at her annoyed at her accusing tone.
She just rolls her eyes at me and gets up to sit with her hysterical mother. I run my hands over my face. This all was just a huge mess.
“Paul!” Jill cries standing up and running to the man who was like a second son to her.
I don’t move from my seat. The quilt starts to sink in then. Not only did Damon and I argue before this, I was also doing something or someone I shouldn’t of been doing.
“Alexa, are you okay?” I ignore his question and see Amelia glance between the two of us.
“I need some air.” I mutter leaving the waiting room I run for the nearest exit. As soon as my lungs breath in the fresh air, I allow my tears to run down my face, one by one each holding regret and guilt.
Ayveri
Beep. Beep. Beep.
I knew that noise. No it wasn’t the noise to my alarm clock or a phone ringing. It was the very familiar heart monitor. I could feel the tube before my throat and my lungs burning. I try to breathe through my nose and am set into a coughing fit. Panic surges through me because I don't know where to breathe from.
“Calm down honey. Lay back so I can remove your breathing tube.” Pepto Bismol scrubs is all I see.
Great, not only am I dying of suffocation but the last color I am going to see is throw up pink.
I stay calm while she forcibly removes the intruding breathing tube and sip the water she thrusts into my hand.
“Are you in any pain honey?”
Seriously with the nicknames? Don’t you know my name! I am a patient after all it should be written down everywhere in this pale room.
I shake my head at her, refusing to speak knowing I will only cough more.
“I will go get your doctor.”
I don’t acknowledge her as she leaves instead I look around for any sign that my mom has been here. I relax immediately when I see the guest bed and her bag on top of it.
I lay watching the clock, waiting for someone to come back, well anyone except bubble gum.
Right on cue my mother walks through the door.
“Mommy!” I whine and let the coughing happen.
“Ayveri.” She yells and comes to engulf me in her arms.
“Oh I was so worried honey. Never do that to me again! I swear I will beat your ass!”
Like it was my fault! Yes mother like I purposely get into burning buildings and end up in hospitals.
“Where's Damon?”
“He is in the ICU. Thats all they will tell me! Some thing called patient confidentiality.” She waves her hand at me while I take another sip. “Be lucky the firemen got there in time young lady or you would already be turned into ash!”
“Mom stop being dramatic.” I sip my water soothing my aching throat and burning lungs.
Before she could lecture me a blond doctor barges into the room. Maybe my mother should teach him some manners since his mother didn’t!
“Ayveri, I am doctor Neil. Are you in any pain?” He asks grabbing my head he does the stupid flashlight thing. I yank my head back glaring at him.
“Well now I do! Ever hear of manners!” I growl.
“Ayveri!” My mother scolds. I ignore her and keep my glare on him.
He only gives a small laugh. “You breathed in a lot of smoke and had a lack of oxygen for a good minute. We are going to keep you over another night for observation.”
“Why were you flashing a light in my poor eyes if nothing is wrong with my head then!”
“Ayveri!” I hear the smack before I feel it and reach to rub my shoulder.
“Irritability is a normal reaction from many patients when they wake up and it is a good sign.” Doc Neil tells my mom. I smirk at her knowingly. “I am just making sure they are still responsive Ayveri. Now I have more rounds to make. If you have any questions nurse Becky will help you.”
He walks out the door with no further comments and I watch as pepto walks in.
“Are you hungry?” Pepto asks checking my vitals once again.
“Please.” I mutter.
I wait for bubble gum to get my food and I wonder. Is Damon going to be okay. That could've been me. Why did I have to be so stupid and not move.
I was going to get fired. I could feel it, because I didn't move. I put him in this hospital.
Since I put him in here, in going to help him get better. Whether he liked it or not.
Damon
I was numb. I couldn’t feel anything which was making me second guess if I was actually awake or not. I could hear the beeps of the oxygen machine and I could smell the distinct smell of a hospital. It reminded me of my father. Him being a doctor and all, I grew up with this smell. The smell of bleach and sickness mixed with a little bit of death.
“He's waking up”
Or I am already awake. Who invited captain obvious here? Wait. I was the patient. Great what happened? Paul drop another cement brick on my foot and they have to knock me out this time?
“Damon? It’s mommy, can you hear me?” I haven’t called her mommy since I was ten. If she didn’t sound or smell like my mother of twenty eight years I would of thought some lady escaped from the psych ward.
My eyes open slowly and I squeeze them back shut before I am blinded more by the fluorescent hospital lights.
“Don’t panic son. You have a breathing tube in. They are going to remove it in a second.”
I reach up and sure enough I have a tube shoved down my throat. What the hell did they give me? Horse tranquilizer? I couldn’t feel anything. Literally.
I hear a door close and then shut and a nurse's voice going over the steps to remove my buddy mr.breather.
Once it is removed I open my eyes fully and see my mom and dad watching me like hawks. This was going to get annoying and quickly. My mom shoves a cup of water into my hand instructing me to drink.
I obey her and sip the water carefully.
