Synopsis
For 17 year old Maya, life is forever changed when her younger sister, Lilly, passes away in a car accident. An accident that Maya was responsible for, no matter what her family tells her. Overcome with guilt and unbearable grief, the only thing that keeps her going are the nightly visits from Lilly. Although she can feel Lilly's presence throughout the day, it is only during Maya's dreams that she is reunited with Lilly once more. It is her sister's wish that Maya keeps living for the little moments that will take her breath away, even though it was moments like those that caused Lilly to be taken away from her in the first place.
Prologue
They say the moments that you'll remember for a lifetime are the small, insignificant ones but what they don't tell you is that those very moments, the ones you think you'll reminisce about in an instant of pure bliss, can go so tragically wrong. The music was blaring, but not to where it hurt your eardrums and dulled out all of your other senses. Instead, it heightened them, moving through my body in waves. It was the kind of song with barely any words, but it made me feel emotions I thought only people could make me feel. Nothing mattered at that moment. Driving along the highway surrounded by trees, feeling the chilling caress of the wind on my skin as we coasted along the winding road, I was at peace...we were at peace. I knew in that moment, looking at my sister, that this would be one of those insignificant moments that will forever take my breath away.
So, so quickly would I be proven wrong. Everything would go tumbling, spiraling out of control, like our car did that night. Maybe if I had been more focused on the road instead of the pure happiness of the moment before I would've reacted to the deer that seemed to appear out of nowhere. The music was silenced by our screams and the crushing, protesting sounds as our car continued to tumble off the road. I looked at the fearful expression in my sister's eyes for the last time. Sometimes I wished I didn't look over at her in those last minutes so that I could hold onto the contentment that was in them just seconds before. After what seemed like a lifetime, the car finally stopped. My vision blurred and before my eyes finally gave out, I couldn't help but notice the silence that seemed to pierce my skin in the passenger seat where my sister was.
Please, no.
Everything went dark.
1.
Lush, rolling hills freckled with wild flowers surrounded me, fading past the horizon and blending into the sky with vibrant hues of blue, yellow, and green. My golden brown hair fell in thick waves along the small of my back and my deep blue dress swayed gently in the summer breeze, brushing against my ivory skin.
